What I’ve Learned Working for a Home Visit Vet (And Why It Might Be Right for You and Your Pet)
When I joined SagePet Home Veterinary Care after a long career in the corporate world, I knew I was stepping into something different—but I didn’t realize just how meaningful that difference would be. As Dr. B’s life partner, I’ve watched her start and grow SagePet, admiring her compassion and the laser focus she puts on the welfare of the animals she treats.
Instead of spreadsheets and PowerPoints, I wanted connection with pets and their owners–and that’s exactly what I’ve gotten. I’ve had the privilege to watch Dr. B calm anxious dogs and cats with her demeanor and gentle techniques (and maybe a little pharmaceutical help!). I’ve seen painful animals become more playful and mobile through thoughtful treatment plans. I’ve seen a pet’s life extended after finding and treating the true root cause of their issues. And I’ve seen beloved companions breathe their last breath surrounded by the people that loved them in the place they called home.
I’ve had a front row seat to see what life is like running a home visit vet clinic, providing veterinary care entirely in the comfort of our patients’ homes. No clinics. No waiting rooms. Just personalized, compassionate care delivered where pets—and their people—feel most at ease.
Here’s what I’ve learned since joining SagePet, and why I believe so strongly in the power of in-home care.
1. Home Visit Vets Take the Stress Out of Vet Care
I once had a cat that HATED going to the vet, so much that he would foam at the mouth and urinate in his carrier. The in-home experience is completely different then what you’ll sometimes see in the clinic. Dogs aren’t panting nervously in the corner. Cats aren’t hiding in the back of their carriers. Instead, they’re on their favorite rug, curled up on the couch, or exploring the living room as we chat with their human.
By eliminating the car ride, the carrier, the unfamiliar smells, and the noisy waiting room, we remove a huge source of stress—for pets and for their people.
2. Mobility Matters—for Pets and Owners
One of the things I hadn’t fully appreciated before joining SagePet is how difficult it can be for some families to get to a traditional veterinary clinic.
Whether it’s a large dog with arthritis who struggles to get into the car, a cat who refuses to be loaded into a carrier, or an elderly owner who can’t drive—a home visit vet isn’t just a convenience. It’s a lifeline.
In-home care makes veterinary services accessible to those who might otherwise delay or forgo care entirely. That’s something I’ve seen firsthand, and it’s incredibly rewarding to be part of the solution.
3. One-on-One Attention, No Waiting Room Rush
When we visit a home, we are there for a full hour, and that appointment is entirely dedicated to one family and their pets. No phones ringing in the background, no juggling rooms full of patients. It creates space for deeper conversations, more thorough exams, and stronger relationships.
Where this seems to really help is when pets have complex, multi-layered issues. I’ve watched Dr. B prepare for appointments by reviewing reams of prior vet records, reading up on the latest information about certain conditions, and mulling over issues from multiple angles. The thing that really seems to set her apart, however, is how she really listens to what the owner is saying, since they are the expert on their pet. Synthesizing all this information is tricky, and the more relaxed home environment where she isn’t rushed really helps Dr. B come to the right conclusion more often than not.
Plus, pets behave more naturally in their home environment, giving us a more accurate picture of their health and behavior.
4. Perfect for Multi-Pet Households
You’d be surprised how many families tell us they’ve put off vet visits because wrangling multiple pets into the car is just too much. We get it.
As a home visit vet, we can see all your pets in a single visit—without the stress, time, and effort of making multiple clinic trips. It saves you time and helps us build a complete picture of your pets’ health as a family unit.
5. A Better Way to Say Goodbye
While it’s not easy to talk about, we also offer in-home end-of-life care. When the time comes to say goodbye, doing so at home—surrounded by love, familiar smells, and gentle voices—can be a more peaceful experience for everyone.
This is one of the most intimate and compassionate parts of what we do, and I’m honored to be a part of those moments.
Final Thoughts
Joining SagePet Home Veterinary Care has opened my eyes to what’s possible when you meet pets where they live. I’ve seen anxious dogs completely relax during their exams. I’ve heard owners sigh with relief when they don’t have to leave the house. And I’ve seen how a home visit vet model truly changes the way families experience care.
